ECDL Extra - Frequently Asked Questions
What is ECDL Extra?
ECDL Extra is designed to give a more in depth knowledge and understanding of computer use and is equivalent to a Full Level 2 Certificate.
The qualification consisting of 4 units designed to improve delegates understanding and the efficient use of computers.
It opens up a variety of opportunities through the broad range of skills it provides and is designed for both novice and/or intermediate computer users alike.
The qualification is widely recognised by employers as proof of ability and competence when working with IT.
What Units will we Cover?
To achieve the ECDL Extra qualification the delegates will have to complete 3 application units and 1 practical unit:
- Word Processing
- Spreadsheets
- Presentations
- Improving Productivity Using IT
What are application units?
Application units will introduce delegates to Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. They will learn what the applications are used for and how to produce professional and functional working documents with these applications.
When each unit is completed the delegates will be required to sit a test. The tests for the application units consist of work files being loaded on to delegates PC’s and a test paper being handed out to them. Delegates will use the test paper to follow written instructions to complete tasks on the work files that relate directly to the unit they have completed.
The pass mark is 75% for all of the application unit tests.
What is Improving Productivity Using IT?
This unit allows the delegates to demonstrate the practical application of the skills they have learnt in the application units. In the test for this unit delegates are expected to make choices about applications and tools independently.
There are two sections in the test - Performance and Knowledge.
The delegate will have 1 hour to complete both sections which are made up of a scenario and also twelve multiple choice questions.
The pass mark is 75% for Performance and 75% for Knowledge, delegates must pass both parts to achieve the unit.
How do I achieve the ECDL Extra?
To achieve the ECDL Extra qualification delegates will firstly need to be registered with the BCS, the governing body for the ECDL qualification.
Delegates will complete a registration form to enable the Pin-Point Training staff to register them with the BCS, a registration form can be found at the end of this document.
Once registered the delegates will attend a 7 day training course, one day per week over a 7 week period, where each week they will look at a unit. When a unit is completed delegates will be required to sit a test to assess the skills and knowledge gained relating to that unit.
The 7 day training programme consists of the following:

What happens when I have passed my tests?
When delegates complete each of the unit tests their results will be recorded with the BCS; When all tests have been completed and the qualification achieved the certificate will be issued to Pin-Point Training who will forward it on to the delegate.
